Information is Power: The story of Zack Matere goes viral on youtube

Information is Power

Hey guys check out this story of Zack Matere a guy I met on Facebook who almost seems to have a new innovation up on his timeline whenever I look at it. Sooner rather than later this fella’s genius was bound to get noticed as this story has gone viral on youtube with almost a million views when I last checked. This goes to show that Kenyans continue to trail blaze with innovation and now according to his own words on skunkworks…

Hallo skunkers,

I have been invited to this event http://intersectionevent.com/ after a great response to the video i did with google.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

this is an event for innovators and among the speakers are Ed Catmull
Co-founder of pixar, Marissa Mayer google V.P  and Steve Case founder
of A.O.L.

Randy haykin the convener of the event is an angel investor with a portfolio of 200 Million Dollars guys this is big and i have the opportunity to pitch for my leo network of noticeboards idea.to do so effectively i need a team to coach me and an orgarnisation to partner with in creating a serious presentation in January .
The leo noticeboard idea is simple but powerful because it enables immediate access to digital content for rural villagers without much input in capital.

You can hit up Zack on Google Plus as that is his only publicly available profile.

Barcamp day 2 was kicking with Whive.com, Google and Kenya ICT Board making presentations in the early morning session.

Since i was participating i didn’t have a chance to  take any notes on the other presentations but here is a brief summary of what i talked about.

You can read more on the other presentations at WhiteAfrican.com and iHub.co.ke

I showcased Whive.com as an African social networking platform that is offering social networking tools to Kenyans in their colloquial languages.

I also  showed for the first time our social networking Mobile App for Nokia.

This application will be available on iKatiba.com Kenya’s first Mobile App Store from this week. You can view the release dates here http://www.ikatiba.com. Also See our  iKatiba facebook photo album by our fans here

I got a number of interesting questions from the community on use and business case for this applications and demonstrated that we need to innovate at the local level with global thinking.

Here are some of the tweets regarding this

downeym Looks like Whive.com will be a good competitor to
@naijaborn and @camerborn in west africa #BarCampNairobi

whiteafrican Coolest thing about Whive is that it’s being done in 9
colloquial languages in Kenya: http://www.whive.com/ikatiba #barcampnairobi

Amasy RT @iHubNairobi: First up is John Karanja from http://
whive.com a new mobile & web social network. #barcampnairobi

Had an interesting conversation with Bridgette Sexton from Google about integrating google maps which we currently doing at Whive.com

Thanks to the BarCampers for their participation as i really enjoyed both days of the event.

Come back on Monday evening for a full update.

Learning from the Google Boys at GTUG Nairobi

GTUG Silicon Valley

I spent the better part of my Saturday interacting with the boys at Google Kenya.

Amhed  Maawy gave us a brief overview of what services Google is offering within the Kenyan Space.

They are:

  1. Google Search
  2. Google Site
  3. Google Mail
  4. Google Blogs
  5. Google News
  6. Google Chrome
  7. Google App Engine

He also officially invited the members to the group. You can also join at

http://groups.google.co.ke/group/nairobigtug?hl=en

Next up was Andrew Wachira who gave a detailed description on how to use Google Sites and AppEngine, in that single session we learnt how to make simple Forms and collect data in SpreadSheet and CSV format.

We also learnt how to install and develop applications using Python and Google OS Databases.

We discovered that google basically offers huge space and bandwidth for you to develop your web applications.

Jeremiah Kamau showed us how to integrate and manipulate the Google Maps Engine and also announced that Google maps .co.ke for Kenya had been launched.

All in all the GTUG meeting was succesful with many questions and discussions on how Kenyans can succesfully use the google cloud.

For more details do join the group and learn new skills that could help you in future.
