Western style democracy only works well in societies that are relatively well developed, wealthy, literate and have high living standards. Without these factors you will have people who in all honesty will be unable to appreciate and handle the wide freedoms and RESPONSIBILITIES because they are too poor and too gullible to be used (abused/misused) and be taken advantage of. Though i do not like authoritarian rule, a couple of African 'Mahatir Mohammeds' and 'Lee Kuan Yews' who will not hesitate to 'nyorosha fimbo' will do the trick. I agree to some extent.
